Johannesburg: South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who was forced to announce his retirement from international cricket after a freak injury, could regain some vision in his left eye and possibly play again.

Shuaib Manjra, head of the medical team treating Boucher, was quoted in media reports as saying that the latest tests have still to show any detachment of the retina.

"There`s no obvious detachment of the retina, which is very positive. But, clearly, we can`t say it`s 100%, because we still need to go in physically and have a look at it," he was quoted as saying.

The team, however, is amazed at the amount of damage caused by the bail that was dislodged by Imran Tahir’s delivery.

"I spoke to him now, and he`s still convinced that the ball hit him. We haven`t seen such a severe injury in cricket, and that`s why we`ve been trying to figure out the exact mechanism of the injury,” he added.

"The amount of damage is not commensurate with simply a bail hitting him, unless there was a freak angle [or] a freak speed and it hit him in a vulnerable spot – in other words, if everything just went wrong for him on that day."
