An improved New Zealand batting performance couldn`t avert yet another defeat to the West Indies, by 55 runs in the second one-day cricket international in Kingston, Jamaica, on Saturday.

Down 1-0 in the five-match series after a nine-wicket defeat on Friday, New Zealand were set a daunting 316 to win before being dismissed for 260 with three overs to spare at Sabina Park.

A fighting, unbeaten 71 off 62 balls by B J Watling gave New Zealand an outside hope of victory, but he ran out of partners after captain Kane Williamson (58) and Martin Guptill (51) chipped in.

Earlier chasing an imposing total of 315-5 after centuries by Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, New Zealand at least showed better effort with the bat after a poor show on Friday.

The tour now heads to St Kitts where New Zealand face a series defeat with two matches to spare on Thursday if they can`t turn things around.
