Electric Pole Falls On Autorickshaw Injures Driver
Alleged negligence of the Electricity Department officials left an auto-rickshaw driver critically injured when an electric pole at Sangeet theatre junction fell on the three-wheeler he was driving on Thursday.
The driver, Mohd. Azeemuddin, 48, sustained bleeding wounds on his head and was admitted to the Gandhi Hospital.
He was going from Marredpally side to Rail Nilayam and turning left at the junction when the pole fell on his moving vehicle.
The steel pole weighing heavily crushed one third of the vehicle.
According to Gopalapuram Sub-Inspector K. Bhanu the Electricity Department authorities had planned to remove old electric poles on the Sangeet theatre-Rail Nilayam stretch to facilitate road expansion plan for MMTS project.
Having laid new electric poles in the route, the authorities engaged a contractor to remove the old ones.
“Wires of the poles were removed on Wednesday morning and already the concrete base of the poles too was dismantled. This weakened the foundation of the pole,” Abeda Begum, a roadside cobbler and an eyewitness to the incident, told the police.
Residents of the surrounding localities said, fortunately, not many pedestrians were passing by the junction when the pole fell.
“Traffic policemen stand at the same point daily to book rule violators. They just left the place and the three-wheeler came there only to get crushed under the pole,” they said demanding compensation to the injured vehicle driver.
The police registered a criminal case under section 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code.
“We will find out the contractor and the official, who were responsible for the incident and arrest them after gathering evidence,” the police said.
