OU Campus On The Boil Again
Tension returned to Osmania University campus on Thursday when students hurled stones at policemen after police foiled their attempt to lay siege to Assembly building to stall the Presidential poll.
The OU campus, nerve-centre of pro-Telangana agitation, remained calm for the six months. But, the call by different Student Joint Action Committees urging the MLAs from Telangana region to boycott the Presidential poll and their attempt to take out a rally to Assembly led to tension.
Initially, the TRS Vidyarthi Vibhag activists assembled at the Arts College and burnt the effigy of YSR Congress party leader, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. They were protesting the plan of YSR Congress Legislature Party leader, Vijayamma to stage demonstration to highlight the plight of weavers in Sircilla of Karimnagar on July 23.
Meanwhile, the S-JAC activists joined them and they took out a procession towards the NCC gate condemning the participation of elected representatives from Telangana region in the Presidential poll. Raising slogans, the group of over 100 students reached the NCC end only to be prevented by the policemen in riot gear. Arguments ensued soon and the students squatted on the road. As police moved in and arrested their leaders Pidamarthi Ravi, Rajaram Yadav and others, some of them ran back and rained stones on policemen.
The stone throwing continued for over 30 minutes while the police observed restraint. Police said those who indulged in the stone throwing were not students, but people who came on three bikes. “They were identified on the basis of video footage,” police claimed.
